Bible Verses:Matthew 4:18-22 (NIV)
Jesus Calls His First Disciples
18 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew. They were casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.
21 Going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were in a boat with their father Zebedee, preparing their nets. Jesus called them, 22 and immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him.
Bible VersesMatthew 14:22-33 (NIV)
Jesus Walks on the Water
22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, 24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.
27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”
   29 “Come,” he said.
Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!”
31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”
32 And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. 33 Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Grace to you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. It’s so wonderful to come to Haidian Church English Service. Every time I come here, I’m more and more convinced that Jesus rocks. Amen.  As the worship team has done a great job today, I’ve enjoyed it, because Jesus rocks too. Amen.  Do you love Him? It’s such wonderful blessing to be able to speak to you here. I am so thankful to God and to Haidian Church, I’m given the chance to share with you what God has done for me in my life,  what God has spoken to me in the past. Jesus is wonderful, so God is good, all the time; all the time God is good!  Amen!  Everybody say Amen! Great, I like the interactions here, it’s such a lively church, I just enjoy being here.

Today I am going to talk about Jesus, of course Jesus!  Today I will talk about Jesus walking on the surface of the water, and Faith in Him.  I have heard there are many new Christians here,  How many of you has become Christian less than a year, can you put your hands up? How many of you has been Christian for more than a year? How many of you have not been Christian yet?  And how many of you haven’t put your hands up yet? Nobody just myself I guess.  I love being new Christians,  you get so many new things to learn, as you learn from Jesus, from the Bible, little by little you will find out how good and great Jesus is, and how much blessings we have got in Him.
The lord has put so much in me as I pray to him to find out what to speak today. God told me many of us are struggling with the Faith in Him.  Sometimes we feel on the top of a mountain, it’s wonderful and terrific; and sometimes we feel quite low.  It's like what described in today’s passage: Mathew 14:22,  “Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone, and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.
Do you know the word “buffetted”? My friend told me if you ever see the word “buffet” eat as much as you can. That’s the meaning of “buffet”, but that’s not the only meaning. There is another meaning as you can see in this passage as hit - it’s stricken by the wind. So the boat was, if you can imagine, up and down, up and down, and shaking. Like my faith is sometimes, maybe your faith as well, up and down, up and down, and that’s not so good.  So Jesus has come to teach His disciples, our Lord is so good, He doesn’t want to see our faith with ups and downs, shaking.
In Christian life, it’s not about your faith in Him, it’s about His Faith in you!  Why when Jesus called his disciples, the disciples just left everything and followed Him.  Every week there is a Chinese Talk Time led by brother Lv Guangyuan, and I was helping him last week upstairs on the third floor. If you are interested in learning Christianity in Chinese you can join us.  If you speak English, it’s on the second floor  there we talk about Jesus.
Last week we were sharing the passage on Mathew 4:18-22, “As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon called Peter and his brother Andrew.” Jesus called them, immediately they just followed Him and they left their nets and job. Even another two brothers, they left their father and their family, left their family business, followed Jesus. My question is why, when Jesus called them, they just followed?   I wonder today if I come to you and say “Come, follow me.”  Would you do that?  When I was little, some guy really came to me and said: “Come, follow me.”  I thought, “shall I follow or not? " My Mother told me not, if any strangers came to you and wanted to take you, never go. So this is a big contrast, when Jesus called his disciples, they left everything and followed him. Why is that?
To answer this question I have to talk about the Isreal history, the Jewish background. Some people wonder: “ The Bible is written at least 2000 years ago, what does it have to do with me? I am not interested in the history.”  Today we are going to share something which is very powerful, that is going to be planted in your hearts and will change your lives, that can transform all lives.
Our goal of coming to Haidian church should not be just to meet friends, happy chatting, some come to the church to learn languages as the objective; some to find language learning friends and teachers which motivate them to the church..  Those are not right motives to come here.  Our goal is to meet Jesus and to be transformed like Him. Amen.  God wants to see our hearts, let’s pray: Dear Father, we thank you that we can come today, we can come to You presence.  Lord, may Your presence fill us up, so we can meet Jesus face to face, we will be transformed and will never be the same like before.   In Jesus names, Amen.
Let’s talk about Isreal history,  Jesus is Jewish,  In Jesus’ time  there were some respected people in the whole Isreal. Those people were called “rabbis”. Rabbi literally means teacher, actually it’s more than a teacher, it’s not the concept of teacher today, it’s so respected in the nation, and there were only a few rabbis in the whole Israel.  To become a rabbi is good, you could speak to thousands of people every Sunday like this, and people respect you. Rabbi knew well about the Jewish Bible, which is our Old Testament. A rabbi must learn so much to become a qualified rabbi, it’s everybody’s dream to become to rabbi in those days.  In that time, people went to school to learn the Jewish Bible while there was not so much other things to learn, their ultimate goal was to become a rabbi. So everybody wanted to become a rabbi, and the people would follow rabbis.
Starting at the age of six, the children would go to a Jewish school, that’s the only school they’ve got.  They would learn the Law, it’s called the school of Torah, which means the school of Laws,  Mosaic laws - the five books written by Moses.  About four years later, at the age of about ten, they would finish that school like our primary school,  they were expected to memorize the whole five Moses books. Isn’t that amazing, then they would be given some examinations. If they were good enough, means they were the best students, they could get into the second stage. What happened to the rest - not best students? The teachers would tell them: “Go back your family and learn some family business and make a living.”
So the best of all students go to the second stage of the school by the age of ten like our middle school. In the Second stage, the children would learn the rest of the Jewish Bible - The Old Testament.  It’s about this thick, they were expect to memorize the whole Jewish Bible, then about another four years when they were about to finish that, they would be given next chance to proceed to the next stage.
The next stage would be very amazing, everybody wants that.  That would be to follow a rabbi.  The Children could follow a rabbi, live with him, and go wherever with the rabbi.  But before they could be chosen by a rabbi, they needed to pass some examinations. The rabbi would make sure only the best of the best students could go to see him.  And then the rabbi would ask some questions.
Everybody expected to see the rabbi.  As the children reached the age 13-14, they could have a chance to be examined by a rabbi. The rabbi would come to test them: “Can you remember everything? I will ask you some questions.” This was to see whether they can memorize everything from The Old Testament. If they could, that is not the end actually, they had to be asked another set of questions. Because the rabbi has to make sure only the student had good memorizing ability but also he got  talents and potential to become exactly like this rabbi.  Every rabbi is different,  he carries his own style in interpreting the Bible. As this student not only would learn knowledge from him, he also would learn the style of the rabbi.
In Israel  they called a rabbi’s student as a disciple, they could tell whose disciple he is, who’s his rabbi. Because the disciples not only learnt the knowledge but also learnt the body knowledge from the rabbi. They would learn exactly what it was from him about everything. So the rabbi came to the student and would ask a few questions. If the student was not good enough, even though could memorize everything but the rabbi did not think the student was bright enough, then the rabbi would say: “Go back home, learn some family business and make a living. And find a wife and make a baby. Maybe your baby will become a rabbi.  I am sorry you have to go.”  So the studwents would leave the school, because there would be no school any more, for them it was a sad thing because everyone wanted to become a rabbi.
If the student was good enough,  if the rabbi saw the potential,  the rabbi would say: “Come, follow me!”  When Jesus went to his disciples, said: “Come, follow me!” What is he saying?  He is actually saying I see the potential in you to become like me.  He is saying I can see you will become like me.  Many times we feel our faith is so difficult, sometimes good, but sometimes we feel bad. Maybe God has called you to do a certain job in your life, there is a calling in your life. You see so many difficulties, like you were waved in the sea.  It’s time to focus on Jesus. It’s time to think about Him when he says “Come, follow me!”  He says: “You will be like me.” Amen.  It’s not our faith in Him that matters, it’s His Faith in you!  When Jesus called you, he already sees that you will become like Jesus.
When all the disciples were called by Jesus, they just left everything. Why? Maybe because they wanted to become a rabbi. Not only that, they saw the qualities in Jesus, these are altogether beautiful, He is wonderful, the best not only on earth but also in heaven. They wanted to become like Jesus.   That is why when Jesus was walking on the surface of the water, Peter said: “Lord, if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” (Mathew 14:28)  Why did Peter want to say this?  Peter was the one always spoke first.  Peter said: “Lord, tell me to come to you, I want to walk on the surface of the water as well.”   He believed if Jesus called him to go anywhere, he would be able to go.  And Jesus said “Come.” (Mathew 14:29). It must have been in every disciple’s mind, if Jesus could perform any miracles, they could perform the same to some extent. If Jesus could walk on the water, they could too especially when Jesus said “Come”. Then Peter left the boat, he was quick, he not only spoke fast, his action was also fast. So he walked into the water, and he succeeded and he walked towards Jesus. That was a miracle.
A true Christian’s life is a miracle.  Everybody comes to God, it’s a miracle. If you can really believe in Jesus and understand He is the Savior, He is the Lord of all, it’s a miracle. The creator of universe Who create everything on earth and in heaven, He says you could perform miracles too, calls you onto a wonderful journey.
After that  Peter saw the wind, instead of looking at Jesus, he looked around. He saw the wind. Let me ask you a question: Does it matter if the wind is big or not for Peter to continue walking on the water?  No, it doesn’t matter. Because walking on the water is a miracle. It doesn’t relate to how much the wind is. It should have affected Peter walk with Jesus on the water.  So even the wind is big in Beijing you can always come to Haidian Church.  Peter was looking at the wind and falling, the wind did affect him, why? Because Peter changed his focus. What can we learn from here?  Always fix your eyes upon Jesus, you will able to succeed in whatever Jesus has called you to do. That is a secret - look at Jesus!
When Peter was sinking he said: “Lord, save me!” (Mathew 14:30) he cried out immediately, and Jesus saved him. We have learnt from here:  Always look at Jesus even though the environment is so difficult around you, and even the wind is so severe.  It is like I came back to China a bit long time ago. As I have stayed in England for seven years, that’s why I sound a little bit like Brits with British accent. I came back to China because God has called me to. It was not easy,  I was told if you go aboard there will be a culture shook, and you need take sometime to get used to it. And when you come back home country, there is a reverse culture shook, and you need to be shocked back, and that’s tough.  Somebody told me that actually the reverse culture shook is much more greater than the culture shook you first experienced when you went abroad.
I read newspapers occasionally, I saw something on the internet and on the newspaper complaint about the food ( I always believe Chinese food is the best though), about the housing, about crowded subway system curently, about many things,  Sad to know problems in China,  and you have to know “GuanXi”, Guanxi now has become a proper English word for relationship.  I was not sure if I give up all I had acheived in the UK for seven years, whether I could be more successful  back home China, I have to make a new start life here which I wasn't sure.
There may be too much change. This has come to a point that you can’t decide, it has changed my plan.  I complained to God about His plan, not mine. Suddenly God said to me: “Bing, I am changing China.”
God told me: “I am changing China.”
God said: “I am changing China.”  Amen.
God said to me: “I am changing China, and you will see.”
God, the creator of the universe, the redeeming God, He said to me: “I am changing China.”
I said: “That’s good! But how?” You have to be practical with God, you know.  How?”
God said: “I am changing China through you, I am changing China through you, through you, through you, through you...”  Hey, I am changing China through you!”  This is Jesus speaking, God is changing China through his children, we are the sons and daughters of God.  We have received this calling from God,  to change the world where we are living. Amen. He is changing China through you.
The time has come for every Christian to be Salt and Light in our society; the time has come that the church will be seen like the city on the hill; the time has come that Chinese Christians will influence China; the time has come that we can together change China, everywhere we go, in the work place, in your family, in your community..., we have the miraculous power of the Holy Spirit working in us, God is changing China.
China is going to be a real strong nation, not just in economic wealth, but also really powerful in spirit, in every aspect.  And that takes not only the efforts of us together, but also China needs God in leading us.  China Chrisitans will be leading China.  God is going to put us in the positions where we can influence China. That is not your effort, that’s God’s work. The time has come.
During the years about 1500s – 1800s, God is British, He changed UK. After that, God is American, He changed US. How about 21st century? God is Chinese, He is changing China.  God is not really Chinese, American, or British,  what I mean is God is changing China! Fix your eyes upon Jesus, this calling from God is so great, we can’t succeed with our own strengths. Our faith is sometimes weak, but His Faith is always strong. we should always be like what Peter did at the beginning, he looked at Jesus, ignored the environment.
Turn your eyes upon Jesus.  (Sing in English)
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
( Sing in Chinese)
Dang zhuan yan yang wang ye su,
Ding jing zai ta qi miao ci rong,
Zai jiu zhu rong yao en dian da guang zhong,
Shi shang shi bi ran cheng wei xu kong
Turn your eyes upon Jesus, Amen. Give Him praise!
Hallelujah! Praise God!

if you are living on a beautiful mountain,
or lying in a dark valley,
whenever you look up,
you will find The Lord has prepared
all we need for you and me.

Although light rain sprinkles on our faces.
the sun above the clouds, never changes,
ha ah, it never changes.
