This week's message was given by Pastor Wu. He took verses from Romans 1:14-16 (NIV):

"14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks, both to the wise and the foolish. 15 That is why I am so eager to preach the Gospel also to you who are in Rome. 16 For I am not ashamed of the Gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes: first to the Jew, then to the Gentile."

As Christians we have an obligation to teach God's Word and share the Gospel. Just like Apostle Paul, the way we can pay back our debt to God is to sread the Good News throughout the entire world. Before Paul began his ministry, he actively persecuted Christians. Once he was converted, he recognized his duty to God and to God's people. The Gospel is for everyone! In Romans, Paul writes that it is for both Jews and non-Jews, those living within Rome and outside of Rome.

In our own lives, we were captives to sin, but now we are alive in Christ. Our sin separated us from God, but through Jesus' sacrifice for us, we are able to be free from the bonds of sin and pursue a relationship with God--the Creator of the Universe! It is God's will for all of us as Christians to let the world know that the relationship we have with Him is available to everyone else as well. We need to remember our mission does not end when we walk out of church on Sunday, but continues in our homes, workplaces, and when we spend time with friends. Jesus died so that we could live. In turn, it is our obligation to live for Him and do His will. This includes spreading the Gospel and serving God in different ways with our own special spiritual gifts.

Why did Paul travel to Rome, the capital of the most powerful empire on earth at that time? In thinking about this, I wonder why I came to Beijing--the capital of one of the most powerful nations on earth during the 21st century. Although the sights are amazing to see and being able to experience a new culture is very rewarding, I think that I have a bigger purpose than that. Preparing to spend five months in China, I had to continually trust that God would provide for me in China: a house, a job, relationships with others. It has been amazing to see how the Lord has blessed me in my short time in Beijing. I got connected to a great group of people at the Haidian Church. Even though my Chinese is terribly average, it has been great to share with others my own culture learn a little more about Chinese culture. In the book of Romans, Paul did not let culture be a barrier. Paul's obediance to Jesus' mission allowed him to evangelize many regions in the world.

Pastor Wu gave an example of people who want to hear good news: If billionaire founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, came to China to speak at a conference about how to make money, how many people do you think would show up? How many people do you think would pay to hear him speak? People are eager to learn about ways to find happiness and prosperity! What better thing to share with them than the love of Christ? A relationship with Jesus will bring much more than money ever could. Knowing Jesus gives you a fulfilling purpose and sense of direction. It is also great to know that there is a big God who loves and cares about you.

This is why we have an obligation. Jesus did not just die for you, but for everyone around you. It is our job as Christians is to deliver the news of the free gift of Grace that the Lord has given us. Let us not forget what He did for us, and what we need to do in return.

Worship Song: By Faith

By faith we see the hand of God
In the light of creation's grand design
In the lives of those who prove His faithfulness
Who walk by faith and not by sight

By faith our fathers roamed the earth
With the power of His promise in their hearts
Of a holy city built by God's own hand
A place where peace and justice reign

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward
Till the race is finished and the work is done
We'll walk by faith and not by sight

By faith the prophets saw a day
When the longed-for Messiah would appear
With the power to break the chains of sin and death
And rise triumphant from the grave

By faith the church was called to go
In the power of the Spirit to the lost
To deliver captives and to preach good news
In every corner of the earth

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward
Till the race is finished and the work is done
We'll walk by faith and not by sight

By faith this mountain shall be moved
And the power of the gospel shall prevail
For we know in Christ all things are possible
For all who call upon His name

We will stand as children of the promise
We will fix our eyes on Him our soul's reward
Till the race is finished and the work is done
We'll walk by faith and not by sight
