Bible Verses  John 5:1-9

1 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for a feast of the Jews. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie —the blind, the lame, the paralyzed 4 (and they waited for the moving of the waters. From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had.) 5 One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?” 7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.” 8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath.

Preacher: Pastor Jassica Wang

Dear brothers and sisters, we are happy to see you again, before we start worshipping, let’s pray together: Dear almighty God, heavenly Father, we thank You for Your love and healing, thank You Jesus our Savior, Lord we ask for Your presence be with us, we are all in Your hands, please come into our hearts, open our spiritual eyes and ears, so that each one of us can see the Truth, experience your power and healing, and understand You more than before. Lord, I ask please speak through me, give me the Word that You want me to share with brothers and sisters, so that we can grow together in faith, in Jesus name, Amen.

A month ago I went to the States for a visit and exchanging information on church ministry, last Sunday we came back and joined the Easter Sunday service. I was so touched by God’s power in the US and back here in Haidian church. Yesterday we went on an one-day spring trip with a group of our Haidian English Fellowship volunteers. We stayed in a village hostel which is near the Great Wall, we climbed mountains, walked down the beautiful lake, in the evening we got together, shared each other’s testimony about knowing Jesus and praised the Lord, and what a coincidence, we think it’s arranged by God, we met an old Christian lady, she is the hostel’s owner’s mother, 78 years old, she came to known God and became Christian when she was 72, before she had suffered a lot from her illness in her life, then two years ago her illness disappeared through prayer, she believes Jesus healed her, she was excited talking with us and said, “Jesus is the healer, I am a living testimony of our powerful God, do not worry about anything, God loves us. ” Yes, true healing comes through faith in the power of God. Amen!

Sometimes we share this good news to non Christians, those people who have not been saved, may give us different responses, “Hey, you know, I’m in different situation, that won’t work for me.” We all face problems in life, but we are blessed, becuase we have known Jesus, we have special relationship with our Savior, we can fix our eyes on God, and trust in Him with His power, nothing is impossible with Him. Think about the problems you may have now in your life:
  • Health
  • Financial
  • Job or study
  • Relationships
  • Spiritual or mental: hurt, hopeless, lonely, stressed, guilty

We all face challenges in our daily life. Maybe you have tried your best effort, still couldn’t solve the problems; maybe you have discussed it with your friends still doesn’t work... I would like to say we are not the worst ones in this world, we still have hope, we find the answer in John 5:1-9, the disabled was in a very bad situation for 38 years, can you imagine that, worse than anyone else here, with no one came to help him get into the pool, he must have been very dirty, very poor, and in need of friends, he may have felt hopeless that he couldn’t be healed for so long  – 38 years, most of us here do not have that kind of illness for that long I guess.

Yet this man was blessed, because Jesus came to him, Jesus knew what happened in his life, healed him. Jesus has so many titles we call Him Lord, teacher, high priest, prophet, … now we are talking about Jesus is the healer, He has power to heal all of us, physically, mentally and spiritually.   Do we want to get healed?

Jesus asked the man, “Do you want to get well? ” John 5:6. That was about desire, a decision the man should make for himself.  The man replied Jesus that no one there helped him get into the pool, so he couldn’t have a chance to get well. Now look at our own lives, do you want to get well with your problems? Yes, Jesus is our healer, true healing comes through faith in the power of the living God, if you open your heart, tell Jesus your problems, He hears us, He answers us at the right time.

In John 5:8, “ Then Jesus said to him, ‘Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.’ At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked.” What do you think after reading this part, maybe you feel nothing, because you are not that man. The sick man who suffered for 38 years was cured at once, we, through experience, have known that Jesus is God, He can heal us, He can help us with our life problems. True healing does not come from your own limited efforts, nor friends help, it comes from the power of God, through faith in Jesus - we call on Jesus, believe Jesus can help us. Amen. If you do believe Jesus can help us get things well, please forget about the stress in the situation, we do our best, and we fix our eyes on Jesus, He is able to do the impossible part for us, true healing comes through faith in the power of our living God. Amen!

When we get to know Jesus, accept Jesus as our Savior, it’s not about the depth of knowledge, information we've got, it’s about transformation and relationships that have impacted us. Have you changed from your heart, inside out, with inner beauty and grace, nine fruits in charactor by the Holy Spirit? Do you have intimate relationship with our Father? Do you love people around you as Jesus teaches us. Think about it, share your testimony with brothers and sisters often, pray whenever and wherever possible, spend time alone with Jesus daily... And we shall see the mighty power of God working in our lives like Jesus helped the disabled man at the pool. Amen!

Worship Song: You Never Let Go

Even though I walk
Through the valley
Of the shadow of death,
Your perfect love
is casting out fear.

And even when I'm caught
In the middle
Of the storms of this life,
I won't turn back,
I know You are near.

For I will fear no evil,
For my God is with me.
And if my God is with me,
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?

Oh, no. You never let go.
Through the calm,
and through the storm

Oh, no. You never let go.
In every high and every low

Oh, no. You never let go,
Lord, You never let go of me

And I can see a light
That is coming
For the heart that holds on,
A glorious light beyond all compare.

And there will be an end
To these troubles
But until that day comes,
Still I will praise You.
Still I will praise You.

For I will fear no evil,
For my God is with me.
And if my God is with me,
Whom then shall I fear?
Whom then shall I fear?
