Worship song: You Are God Alone

Verse 1 You are not a god created by human hands
You are not a god dependent on any mortal man
You are not a god in need of anything we can give
By Your plan that's just the way it is...
Chorus You are God alone, From before time began
You were on Your Throne
You are God Alone, And right now
In the good times and bad
You are on Your Throne, And You are God Alone
Verse 2 You're the only God whose power none can contend
You're the only God whose name and praise will never end
You're the only God whose worthy of everything we can give
You are God that's just the way it is
Bridge Unchangeable
Unshakeable
Unstoppable
Thats what You are

Scripture Reading: John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

Sermon:

When we were singing the song “You Are God Alone”, I could truly feel and sense the presence of the Lord; I could truly feel the movement of the Holy Spirit at one place and another, from one heart to another; I could truly sense how thankful all of us were, and how thankful Rick and Colleen were, when they were leading us to the presence of the Lord in praises to Him. They were singing, “Your love unchangeable; your love unstoppable; your love unshakeable.”

So first of all, I would like to give thanks from the bottom of my heart to the Spirit, and I would like to give thanks to Colleen, Rick and all the members of the worship team because the Holy Spirit and our Lord Jesus Christ is blessing us this morning through these servants, who so devoted and committed their time, but also their heart to the preaching of the gospel, and to the name of Jesus Christ. Let’s give thanks to the spirit and also to them.

When they were singing, “You are God alone, and your love never changes, never shakes and never stops”, I could truly sense and understand why they sang that song so powerfully. They sang that song with so much power, and with so much strength, that our heart could be changed and moved; and also because at the beginning of the worship, Colleen said, we had good times and bad times in our lives; and no matter it was a good day or a bad day, remember that God is with you, and the Holy Spirit is with you, because God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. Because of the love of God, which gives us the eternal life no matter who we are, and we are happy and have hope today. When we were singing the praises of God, we were energized, and we were full of power and happiness.

Dear brothers and sisters, John 3:16 is truly a powerful message from the Lord, telling us that, yes, in our lives, there might be good times and bad times; but remember this, God is with you all the time. Brothers and sisters, at the beginning of this verse 16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…”, God loved so much… What is this supposed to mean? Brothers and sisters, it means that our Lord’s love, the love that we have from the Lord is an unconditional love, is a supreme love, that no matter who you are, God loves you.

And the Bible continues to say, “…that He gave His one and only Son…”.Who gave us the love we have from the Lord? The Lord gave us, which means that the love from the Lord is a sacrificial love, because in order to realize to carry this love over to us, His Son had to die on the cross.

So the Bible, in the following part, continues to say, “…He gave His one and only Son…” Brothers and sisters, let me ask you, how many begotten sons does God have? Only one. He does not have any sons other than Jesus Himself. Jesus Christ is the only one, the only begotten that God has. Brothers and sisters, I am sure that you will treasure and cherish the things that you have with only one piece. If you are the only son of your father and your family, I promise that your parents will love you more than anything else. But our heavenly Father so loved us that He sacrificed His one and only Son on the cross, so that we could be saved.

And then Bible continues to say, “…that whoever believes in Him…”. Whoever, everybody, no matter if you are a sinner, if you are righteous, if you are a bad person or a good person, if you are a pastor or a lay person, or a member of the worship team, God loves us equally. God does not love me more than you because I am a pastor. God does not love us in that way. God does not love me more than the worship team because I am a pastor, because I preach the gospel, because I preach the name of the Lord. God loves us equally.

And the Bible continues to say, “…that whoever believes in Him…”. Brothers and sisters, if you want to go into heaven to be with the Lord Jesus Christ, if you want to be with God, the only thing you should do is to believe in Jesus. You do not have to donate a million dollars to the church; you do not have to sacrifice a dove; you do not have to kill or slaughter a cattle or a sheep to be burned on the yard of the temple, or the temple court. All you have to do is to come to the presence of the Lord to acknowledge His name, to acknowledge He is the only begotten Son of God, to acknowledge He is your Savior. That is the only thing you must do to be saved. The condition is very simple, to believe in the name of Jesus Christ.

Brothers and sisters, John 3:16 is full of power, and full of the message from our God. But when I was reading this verse, I saw three images of God. I saw three things God has been doing in order to have us saved. The first image of God is that God so loved the world that Jesus was willing to be sacrificed on the cross to die for the so-called righteous as well as sinners, the tax-collectors and the all the prostitutes. That’s the first image I saw when I was reading John 3:16.

In the book of Romans, chapter five, God tells us through His disciple Paul, “Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die.” (Romans 5:7) Because we believe for some people, it is worth it because this person is great to die for him or her. But God’s love is much higher than our love.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)

Would you be willing to die for some body who is in prison? Or would you rather do something good, for some body who is great, or a celebrity? I believe probably many of us would choose to do something for the righteous rather than those who are sinners. But Jesus died on the cross when we were sinners. That is the image I saw in John 3:16. God so loved the world that He was willing to be crucified on the cross so that each one of us could be saved if we believe in the name of Jesus Christ.

In Luke chapter  seven, a sinner who was a prostitute was also saved by the Lord Jesus Christ. The Bible tells us that, “A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, ‘If this man were a prophet (he was doubting), he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is – that she is a sinner.’” (Luke 7:37-39)

You see, Jesus was allowing a sinner to touch Him; Jesus was allowing Himself to be exposed to a sinner. Why? Because Jesus so loved the world that He was willing to be crucified on the cross to die for the sinners, the tax-collectors, for the prostitutes. That is the first image I saw when I was reading John 3:16.

The second image of Jesus is that of the Lord, I saw when I was reading this part, verse 16, is that God so much loves the world, God so much loves the world that he endures to be placed in the big building. That He loves us so much that He was willing to endure to be confined to a box. Let me explain to you what I mean by “to endure to be confined to a box”.

Brothers and Sisters in 2 Samuel in the Old Testament Chapter 7, King David one day was feeling so guilty about his life because after so many years of fighting against the local tribal people. Jerusalem became the capital city of Israelites and he became the king of the Israelites. He built himself a big palace.

In Chapter 7 Bible tells us, “After the king was settled in his palace and the Lord had given him rest from all his enemies around him, he said to Nathan the prophet, ‘Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent.’” Brothers and sisters, what does a Palace look like? A Palace is like my home or your home of 40, 50, or 70 or 100 square meters in size?

A palace must be big, must be huge, must be large, must be majestic with a lot of servants serving the king inside it with guns protecting, guarding the palace outside the walls of the palace. People living in the palace must enjoy his or her life very much.

So when King David was living in that palace, he was thinking to build a bigger one, a larger one. Palace, temple for the Lord, for our heavenly father, for God.

But in the book of Isaiah chapter 66, God tells us and also God tells David, “This is what the Lord says, ‘Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house you will build for me? Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool.’” And the palace you build can not house me. The palace you build cannot house me because heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. ‘I do not live in the building built by man.’ I do not live in the place built by man’s thinking. I’d rather live in your heart so that I can be with you when you pray, so that I can be with you when you are weak, so I want to be with you in your heart, live in your heart so that when you pray I can listen to your prayer, to your request.

That is what the Lord wants to say in Isaiah 66. But people tend to confine the Lord in a building. Like King David. In John: 3 the first part, many people came back to Jerusalem for Passover to fulfill their religious duty by doing  two things. One is to give to the temple either dove or sheep or cattle so that these animals can be slaughtered to be burned or sacrificed for the Lord and to the Lord. That’s the first thing Jerusalem was doing.

The second is they gave tenth of what they get and have to the temple to fulfill their religious duty. That is what they do. So once these people came back to Jerusalem they bought cattle, sheep and dove just inside the temple court and gave to the priest to slaughter and burned them in the court of the temple.

This is the picture I try to show to you. The priest was offering the sacrifices to God inside the temple and people who were doing business, dealing with each other, bargaining outside the temple. People who were bargaining outside the temple seem not to care what was inside; people who were offering the sacrifices to God inside seem not to care what were happening outside in the temple court, because people who were bargaining could find God inside the temple, inside the holiest of holy there. They could find God there.

God wants to be that way because people force him to do that. God so loves the world that he endures to be placed in the temple that he endures to be placed in a box. Not because he wants to, but because people put him there.

Yesterday I was involving a fellowship with brothers and sisters. One of the brothers told me that lately he was too busy to come to the church. Another one told me that he was too busy to come to church, but he had been trying his best to be with the Lord Jesus Christ. So one of these two brothers took out a mobile phone, telling me even though he wouldn’t come to church, he had a Bible on that mobile phone. And another one also told me he had one on his mobile phone. So I asked him “would you please show me your Bible on the phone?” So I saw the Bible on the very small screen, so I asked the brother “Did you read the Bible on the mobile phone?” He said “No, I couldn’t, because it was too small to read the Bible on that phone.” Then, how could you find God in the phone, if you did not read the Bible?

So, brothers and sisters, if you do not read the Bible as part of your daily life, you cannot find God in this Bible or this Book. It’s nothing but a book; it’s nothing but a pile of papers. You don’t come over to God but read the Bible, you can’t find God in this pile of papers. If you do not sing and praise of the Lord Jesus Christ, you can find God in nothing but the Book.

Brothers and sisters, if you do not act like Jesus after the worship, after you leave the church, you can’t find God in this building. Many people tell you I do like the building. And let me tell you, if Jesus Christ cannot be found here, if you do not act like Jesus, if you are not living like Jesus, you can’t find Jesus in this building, it’s nothing but a building made of concrete, brace and stone. Brothers and sisters, if you do not act like Jesus after the worship, when you leave the church, you can’t find Jesus in a building. That’s the building Jesus wanted to destroy in our heart. In three days, he will restore another one, so that he can be with us when we pray to him, so that he can be with us when we ask him for help. That’s the second image I saw.

The third image I saw when I was reading John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” When I was reading, I saw a spirit who grieved all the time by us.

When I was reading Ephesians 4:29-32: “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.”

Each day, if our heart is not filled with love and with the Holy Spirit of God, if our heart is filled with bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander and all the form of malice, we are grieving the Holy Spirit. God is a suffering God.

He was crucified so that we could be saved. God was endured to be placed in the building. God was grieved by our bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander and every form of malice.

Brothers and sisters, God so loved the world, he does not expect anything from us. But at least, be rebuilt by the Holy Spirit that you can be just like Jesus Christ in each day of our life. Amen!
